PREFACE

As the grandson of the author, and president of the insti
tution he founded, I feel it a personal privilege to present to
our profession “THE SCIENCE, ART AND PHILOSOPHY of
CHIROPRACTIC”— also named “THE CHIROPRACTOR’S
ADJUSTER”— the one and only book written and published
by D. D. Palmer. In doing so I accede to many hundreds of
requests and letters to republish his original 1910 edition.

This long evident desire of our professional graduates to
own a copy of D.D.’s own book is recognition of the fact that
it is an historical document of the first importance. Page by
page, it reveals the intensity of his convictions. Daniel David
Palmer was dominated by a force— a brilliant mind— driv
ing him through hardships and persecutions u n til his
thoughts were completed and recorded in permanent form
within the pages of this book, so that it might stand as his
written legacy for our profession.

I have long recognized my grandfather’s writing as basic
to a full understanding and appreciation of our Chiropractic
Philosophy; but the reader may share with me a certain
reluctance to call attention to the occasionally unhappy rela
tionship between father and son as noted here and there in
these pages. I could not, of course, edit any of these por
tions and still present this limited reissue as a facsimile.
A note of explanation concerning the two dedications of
father and son, facing one another on pages 4 and 5, is in
order. B.J.’s handwritten dedication appeared in the 1906
edition of his first book, and was reproduced by his father
who then, in his turn, presented his first book to B.J. So you
hold in your hand an exact photocopy of D.D.’s original book
published in 1910.

In studying these pages it should at all times be remem
bered that they were written some fifty-five years ago. While
the material in them clearly sets forth the unmistakable cor
nerstone of our Philosophy and Science, a considerable
amount of additional research has, unquestionably, further
developed and confirmed the scientific proof of D.D.’s origi
nal concept of the cause of disease. Starting with his own
pen and thought processes, in 1895, we see, many years
later, his premise today accepted and recognized, to such a
position of acceptance that Chiropractors now constitute the
largest of all the non-medical healing professions, and his
science is practiced throughout the world.

My grandfather’s work ranks as a most unique and impor
tant contribution to the many volumes of literature con
cerned with the health of humanity. It reveals quite clearly
