n I appeared on STEVE ALLEN'S T V SHOW July l6th 1962 to talk about this
book, the moment I said that it might be psychically dangerous to shake hands,
the audience broke into uproarous laughter.

After all, i.n thi.s mod•ern scientific world the first reaction to such an idea<2 f•

is "how could any such 'crazy' idea be treated seriously?" sotO

But as you stop to think about it, why is it that MOST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD >^ 1
DON'T TOUCH EACH OTHER WHEN THEY MEET AND GREET?

Why do the people of India place their own hands palm to palm in "Namaste?"

Why do Orientals clasp their O W N hands and bow? c/!

Why do American Indians raise their hand and say "HOW?"

Are these anoient peoples aware of inner, eaaret reasons for NOT touching
the cither person? Have these reasons been lost in the misty days of time
gone by? Do the Eastern peoples of the world blindly follow custom
without knowing why -- the same as we of the Western world blindly follow
custom without knowing why?

WHY DO WE SHAKE HANDS ANYWAY?

WHY SHOULDN'T WE?

A JUDGE FROM GEORGIA wrote me of one good reason: " ... it has always been
my theory that civilization would be better off with less hand shaking.
Particularly would this be of an advantage in the fieldofgerms. ..."

THE CHIEF OF PROTOCOL FOR THE U.S. during the last fouryears ofthe

EISENHOWER administration pointed out that for QUEEN ELIZABETH'S visit

"Although the Queen has no strong feelings about it, she prefers ladies
to wear gloves. ... they protect her from flesh contact and ease the

pressure of a handshake -- an important matter to someone who shakes
thousands of hands a day." (House & Garden Magazine page 12k, July 1962)

A RECEPTIONIST for a busy business office confided "Come to think of it,
most salesmen who come into, the office lately DON'T shake hands any more."

So let's explore some fascinating theories as to why it might be "safer" to

STOP SHAKING HANDS the ordinary way.

A MINISTER FROM TEXAS wrote "I have just finished reading your book ...
I liked it very much. My experience in the public makes me know these
things are true.

,'S - t restrict the theories just to the dangers of shaking hands,
n the last chapter let s see how dangers may lurk in unexpected actions -- like
r s s m g your legs, wearing jewelry, watches and rings -- or touching metal. *

AS A MAN FROM SOUTH DAKOTA WROTE: "My trade is heavy equipment operator
in construction and I notice when I run a crane with bare hands, I can
only operate for two hours at a time. My mind and nerves come to an

almost blank. By relaxing for five minutes, I get my strength back.

fvnf e-r t y°Ur boo km>o1rehatYreoubbeleen wearing leather gloves and found
tiiat I don have any of being grounded out."

So now let's find out how these unusual ideas may be of value to you.
