Two years later, Mr. Lincoln was elected President of the United States.
He then called in his personal and political advisors and said: “ You
will recall that 2nd question in the debates, which you advised me not to
ask, which I insisted upon asking. I am now ready to tell you why I did.”
That question was so framed that I knew Douglas would answer it in
such a way as to please THE VOTERS OF ILLINOIS, because Douglas was
willing to pay ANY PRICE to become Senator from Illinois. But, in fram
ing that answer TO PLEASE THE VOTERS OF ILLINOIS, HE DIS
PLEASED THE VOTERS OF THE OTHER 33 STATES, and it was THE
DISPLEASED VOTERS OF THE OTHER 33 STATES who have NOW elected
ME PRESIDENT OF THE U. S.”
Moral: It sometimes pays to lose today, to win tomorrow!
Some of you chiropractors who NOW read these two experiences out
of the pages of history can make some application to some things that have
happened in Chiropractic history.
